How Much Water Does Your Pet Really Need?

A quick guide to daily water needs for dogs and cats, plus easy ways to encourage drinking.

Water is the most important nutrient for your pet, yet it is easy to overlook. Healthy dogs and cats need a steady supply of fresh water every day.

A rough guide

Dogs usually need about 50 to 60 ml of water per kilogram of body weight each day. Cats need a little less, around 40 to 50 ml per kilogram, and often get some from wet food. Hot weather, exercise and dry food all increase the amount.

Ways to encourage drinking

  • Keep bowls clean and refill them at least once a day
  • Place a bowl in more than one room
  • Try a wide bowl for cats so their whiskers are comfortable
  • Use a gravity dispenser or fountain for pets that like fresh, flowing water

Signs of not enough water

Dry gums, sunken eyes and tired behaviour can suggest dehydration. If you notice these or a sudden change in how much your pet drinks, see your vet.

Our water dispensers and bottles make it easy to keep fresh water available at home and on the go.
