How to Trim Your Pet’s Nails at Home Without the Stress
Long nails cause discomfort and slipping. Learn a calm, step-by-step way to keep them short at home.
Long nails can click on the floor, snag on carpets and change how your pet walks. Regular trims keep paws comfortable, but many pets (and many owners) dread the nail clippers.
Start with the paws, not the tool
For a few days, simply touch and hold your pet’s paws, then give a treat. Once they are relaxed, show them the grinder or clippers and let them sniff it before you use it.
Clippers or a grinder?
- Clippers are quick but one cut is final
- A grinder removes tiny amounts at a time and leaves smooth edges
- A quiet, low-speed grinder is easier on nervous pets
Step by step
- Hold one paw gently and press the toe to extend the nail
- Trim or grind a little at a time and stop before the pink quick
- Finish each paw with a treat
- Take breaks if your pet gets restless
If you nick the quick
Stay calm, press a clean cloth or styptic powder on the nail and give your pet a few minutes. Our nail grinder is designed for gradual, controlled trims.
